Step Into the World of Peking Opera

Peking Opera is one of China's most iconic intangible cultural heritages. Through this immersive experience you explore the art of facial makeup, elaborate headdresses, traditional costumes, flowing water sleeves and the expressive power of the classic roles — not as a spectator, but as the character on stage.

Professional Makeup Artist · Four Transformations

  1. Facial Makeup — Making Your Debut (粉墨登场)

Base application, blushing and rouging, outlining eyebrows, eyes and lips, setting the makeup and securing the head frame. Every brushstroke is a reinterpretation of your character.

  2. Headdress & Headpiece — Adorned with Treasures (珠翠琳琅)

Diancui (kingfisher feather) headpieces, diamond-encrusted headpieces, silver bubble headpieces — different roles require specific adornments, and one mistake compromises the entire look.

  3. Costume Styling — A Thousand Attire (行头万千)

Pan (蟒, ceremonial robe), Bi (帔, informal robe), Kao (靠, military costume), Zhe (褶, casual wear) and Yi (衣, general garment) — the five categories of opera costume corresponding to the Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou roles.

  4. Water Sleeves — The Universe in the Sleeves (袖里乾坤)

Three feet of flowing water sleeves express joy, anger, sorrow and happiness. Flicking, tossing, waving and brushing — each movement is a silent line of dialogue.

Master Instructor · Passing the Torch

  • Peking Opera Analysis (京剧解析)

From the Anhui troupes entering Beijing to the Four Great Dan, trace the 200-year history of Peking Opera and understand the weight of the term "National Essence" (Guó Cuì).

  • Role Characteristics (角色特点)

Master the performance paradigms, vocal styles and physical techniques of the Sheng (生), Dan (旦), Jing (净) and Chou (丑) roles to grasp the core of each character.

  • Personalised Guidance (课题指导)

One-on-one coaching in singing, recitation, acting and martial arts (唱念做打). Corrections to your posture, breathing and gaze help you skip years of detours.

  • Rehearsing Repertoire (排演剧目)

Group rehearsals of classic excerpts, from The Drunken Concubine (贵妃醉酒) to Farewell My Concubine (霸王别姬). Step onto the stage as a star performer.

Peking Opera Cultural Aesthetics

Peking Opera is a total art form where visual spectacle, musical melody and stylized movement converge into a single language. The two main musical modes — Xipi (西皮) and Erhuang (二黄) — carry the full emotional spectrum, lyrical and plaintive in gentle moments, resounding with the clash of swords and hooves in passionate ones. The movement code is just as deliberate: a single circle of the stage represents travelling a thousand miles, a single horsewhip represents commanding ten thousand horses.

The Colour Code of Facial Makeup

  • Red (红) — loyalty and bravery
  • Purple (紫) — nobility and high status
  • Black (黑) — integrity and uprightness
  • Pink (粉) — youth and vitality
  • Watery white (水白) — cunning and treachery
  • Oily white (油白) — arrogance and cruelty
